How to Trick Your Body to Play Harder, Longer, and Still Feel Good (Even on the Hottest Days)

If you’ve played pickleball this summer, you know the story: the sun’s up, sweat’s pouring off your brow, and suddenly the fun starts feeling like work.

Maybe you tell yourself you’re just out of shape, or that “at my age, I’ve only got so much gas in the tank.”

But here’s what most rec players (and even a few pros) get wrong: The real reason you fade out in the heat isn’t just dehydration or lack of fitness.

A group of sports scientists recently dug through 51 studies on cooling and athletic performance. The “aha” moment? It turns out your perception of heat is just as powerful as your actual body temperature.

In other words, if you can convince your brain you’re not overheating, you can squeeze out more rallies, longer rallies – and a whole lot more fun.

Outsmarting Your Inner Thermostat

So how can you convince your brain you’re not overheating?

Forget icy showers or frosty drinks. Just drape a cold, wet towel around your neck between games. This simple move sends a “we’re good!” signal straight to the part of your brain that monitors temperature and fatigue.

For an even easier option, you can grab a cooling collar from most online retailers. These stay cold longer and won’t drip on your gear.

In studies, players using these neck-cooling tricks routinely lasted up to 14% longer before hitting the wall. In plain English? That’s another half-game, another hard-fought comeback, or maybe the difference between being first off the court – or last one standing.

Why It Works

You might be thinking: “C’mon, a wet towel or a collar?” Absolutely. The neck is loaded with temperature-sensitive nerve endings – basically it’s nature’s thermostat.

When you cool this area, your brain is tricked into feeling fresher, safer, and less worn out.

In fact, most of the boost you get isn’t from lowering your core temperature. It’s about feeling better, which lets you keep playing with less discomfort.

Of course, this trick works best when you’re dealing with normal game fatigue. If you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, or just “off” during your cooling break, that’s your cue to take a longer rest with water and shade.

Play Smart, Stay Safe – And Share the Secret

For the everyday fatigue that hits when the sun’s high and the games are hot, a cold towel or cooling collar is a game-changer.

So the next time you head to the courts, pack an extra towel – or try a ready-made cooling collar.

Outsmarting the heat doesn’t take youth or magic – just a little know-how and something cool around your neck. Here’s to more rallies, longer laughs, and summer days that end with “one more game?”
