Ever felt like you saw a shot coming but just couldn’t get there in time?
Most players over think “my reflexes are just getting slower.”
But new research suggests that could be wrong. There’s a simple way to sharpen your reaction time.
The Science That Changes Everything
You are not doomed to slow reflexes just because you hit a certain birthday.
A 2025 study followed adults, ages 65 and up, through six weeks of training. Some adults did only “brain games.” Others did the same games but while moving. This combination is known as “dual-task” drills.
The dual-task group saw an impressive 8.6% boost in thinking speed. In pickleball, that translates to faster reads on where shots are headed and quicker decisions on placement.
They also got stronger legs and better balance. That means fewer stumbles chasing down wide shots and steadier positioning at the kitchen line.
What’s more, brain scans showed these players’ prefrontal cortex worked more efficiently. On court, that means your mind won’t wander during long rallies and you’ll stay focused – even in game four.
Bottom line: When you train your mind and your muscles together, you build real, on-court quickness … even if you haven’t been “quick” since the 80s.
Two Simple Brain Tricks You Can Try
At the court, try this solo warm-up before you play. Stand at the baseline and bounce a ball with your paddle. While bouncing, count backwards from 30 by threes: 30, 27, 24, 21. When you mess up the count, start over. When you drop the ball, start over. Give it just 3 minutes.
Your brain has to juggle ball control, math, and balance – just like tracking a fast rally while planning your next shot.
At home, here’s a daily brain builder that takes 2 minutes. Sit in a chair and march in place while spelling your name backwards. Too easy? Try spelling your favorite actor’s full name backwards while marching to a rhythm.
This trains your brain to handle multiple tasks without getting overwhelmed. That’s exactly what happens when you’re dinking at the kitchen line while watching for the perfect attack opportunity.
Don’t Let Old Ideas Hold You Back
Science shows you can sharpen your reflexes and focus with simple brain-body exercises that take just minutes a day.
